Soorasamharam: Sea of devotees on Tiruchendur beach
Amid the sea of devotees, Soorasamharam, a significant event of the seven-day Kanda Sashti festival was witnessed at Subramaniya Swamy temple, the second abode of Lord Muruga in Tiruchendur on Tuesday evening.

The whole of Tiruchendur beach was crowded as the Soorasamharam began at 4.45 pm, with the idol of Lord Jayanthinathar and those of demons taken out in a procession from the temple to the beach, where the ritual was performed.
History unfolds that Lord Subramaniya killed Gajamughasooran, Singamughasooran and Soorapadman to save the mankind. During the schedule, many devotees chanted hymns and joined the chorus Muruganukku araohara and Kandanukku arohara. The Soorasamharam culminated with a pooja at the ‘Santhosa Mandapam.’
After witnessing the Soorasamharam, the devotees took a holy dip in the sea as a mark of ending their fast.
On the sixth day of the festival, the sanctum sanctorum was opened since 1 am and special prayers were performed to the deity Subramaniya Swamy. The temple in the wee hours of the morning and the ‘Vishwaroopa Deeparadhana’ was held at 1.30 am.
On Wednesday, the final day of the festival, celestial wedding (Thirukalyanam) of Lord Murugan and Goddess Valli and Deivanai will take place. Arrangements were done by Temple Thakkar R Kannan Athithan and Joint Commissioner of the Temple Barathi.
