Vijay fans flood social media with freebies-smashing videos
Social media has seen its share of bizarre trends in the recent past, but this could top them all. Many Vijay fans from across the state have monopolised the popular Musically/Tik Tok video-sharing apps to post clips of them smashing and throwing away fans, grinders, laptops and other appliances bearing stickers of former chief minister J Jayalalithaa.

These were freebies distributed by the government over the last few years.
This is the reaction from Vijay fans, who have been outraged by the AIADMK government taking offense to some scenes in his recent movie Sarkar directed by AR Murugadoss, with the makers editing out controversial sections to appease them. One of the scenes in the movie showcases the burning of freebies distributed by the Jayalalithaa-led government, which caused the most tension in the AIADMK faction. There are many other dialogues that are critical of the government as well. Theatre owners also pressured production house Sun Pictures to delete and mute such scenes, fearing a backlash.
Now, several fans of Vijay (many of whom have been promoting the actor to be the chief minister eventually after he enters into politics) have posted videos that show them destroying various electrical appliances, set to Sarkar’s theme music, actor Vijay’s voiceover from the filmand so on.
Televisions are set to fire, perfectly-working laptops are beaten to pieces with heavy items and grinders and mixies are thrown down cliffs: these are some of the creative ways in which the fans choose to show their dissent, with many also continuing to air their personal opinion on the current government.
This controversy follows Vijay’s 2017 release Mersal that also ran into trouble with the BJP for being openly critical about the Union government’s schemes.
