3-years RI for two in EOW case, 3 others acquitted
A Metropolitan Magistrate, Economic Offences Wing (EOW), court convicted two people and awarded three years’ rigorous imprisonment (RI) to them, while acquitting three others in a cheating case filed by the CBI, on Friday.

Passing the orders, Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate S Malarvizhi also imposed a fine of Rs 45,000 on K Liakath Ali, of Marina Travels, and Mithar alias Mithar Hussain.
Of the total fine, Rs 25,000 was imposed on the travel agency, while Rs 10,000 each was imposed on Liakath Ali and Mithar. Those acquitted were K Thangavleu, R Janardhan and R Sridhar.
The prosecution case was that the accused had sent Rs 12 crore of foreign exchange illegally out of India on the basis of forged documents maintained by the travels firm, causing a loss of Rs 12 crore to the Central Government.
After completion of investigation, the charge sheet was filed before the magistrate under Sections 120-B read with Sec 419, 420, 467, 468, 471 of IPC.
After trial, the court convicted two of the six accused, while acquitting three others. The charges against one of the accused was already abated.
