Govt school students to get smart cards next academic year

Accordingly, a tender will be floated soon to introduce the scheme where over 70 lakh students will be benefited. Recently, School Education Minister K Sengottaiyan introduced smart card system in a government school at Porur on a pilot basis.

Tamil Nadu Text Book and Educational Services Corporation, which has been entrusted to implement the smart card project for students, will be appointing an agency to produce smart cards shortly. The appointed company will collect all the details of the students to print the smart cards, which is expected to be ready from the next academic session.

At present, a total of 37,358 government’s primary, middle, high and higher secondary schools are functioning in the State. In addition to this, 8,386 government aided schools are also functioning. These schools have a strength of 70,59,982 students.

A senior official from the Education Department said a QR code will store all information about the student in the smart card and it can also be obtained from the common database through education management system.

According to the official, the card will be equipped with Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) scanner and a microchip. The official pointed out that RFID scanners will be installed at all the entry and exit point in the school. “When the student enters or leave the school, the scanners will store the time and other details. This information will be shared with the child’s parents too.”
