Dengue outbreak: Corporationn collects fine of Rs 22 lakh in 2 months for unclean premises

A Chennai Corporation press release said the civic body is also issuing notices to the owners of vacant plots where garbage piled up. “The owners are being asked to clear the garbage and water stagnation themselves. Meanwhile, the corporation has taken steps to remove the garbage by deploying additional vehicles,” the release added.
The release also said that 715 special medical camps have been conducted to control dengue in the city. “Rs 22.50 lakh penalty was collected during the site inspections by officials. Source reduction (destroying breeding space of mosquitoes) works are carried out by 5,347 workers,” the statement said.
Meanwhile, the Municipal Administration Minister S P Velumani reviewed the dengue and swine flu prevention works at an official meeting in state secretariat. During the meeting, the minister also directed the officials to take necessary steps to control seasonal diseases during monsoon.
Apart from Chennai Corporation, 1,204 persons are deployed in 11 corporations in the state. “In a drive to ensure source reduction across the state, 2,523 dilapidated buildings and 9,527 under construction sites were inspected. During the drive, owners of unhygienic sites are fined and collected Rs 10 Lakh from them,” the statement added.
In 124 town municipalities in the state, Rs 1.07 lakh was collected as penalty. During the review meeting, the minister was apprised of availability of medicines for dengue and swine flu.
