The scholars have been researching on various topics to identify the various factors influencing the criminal behaviour of prisoners and their background under the project, sanctioned by the State government three years ago.
While the main objective of the project is to provide a platform for scholars who are interested to work with prisoners in various research topics. It has been helping both scholars and prisoners.
“While people usually have a negative idea about prisoners, our research helped us understand the causes influencing them. A majority of them come from low socio-economic backgrounds and in some cases, their parental problems were the main reason for their behaviour,” said Dr S Karunanidhi, Professor and Head of the Department of Psychology and project coordinator.
“There were four topics which the scholars focussed on in the first phase. Over the course of the study, the researchers came across many young prisoners (between the ages 18 and 21), who indulged in drug intake, especially ganja. The researchers provide the prisoners counselling in each phase of their research, besides taking up some rehabilitative initiatives like encouraging them to take up including cooking.”
“The scholars would attend a review meeting every six months of their three-year research, attended by a panel including the Vice-Chancellor, the Head of the Department of Psychology, Deputy Inspector General Headquarters and Assistant Director General of Police, Headquarters,” he added.
The State government has now sanctioned the department to take up the second phase, for which applications are invited from eligible candidates. The bio-data of the candidate should reach before November 15, along with a statement of marks and supportive certificates by registered post.
