MSMEs to train college students for job opportunities
In a bid to increase skilled manpower, Tamil Nadu government has decided to enhance the ‘Amma Skill Training and Employment Scheme’ for engineering and polytechnic diploma students in the State by involving more Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs).

Accordingly, MSMEs that will be backed by the government will provide the freshers with training for employment opportunities.
A senior official from Industries Department told DT Next that Tamil Nadu has more than 10 lakh registered units, the highest in the country. The MSMEs involved in various sectors such as leather and leather goods, engineering goods, automotive components, castings, pumps and readymade garments.
“At present only a few industrial units are involved in giving training,” he said adding that now, about 20,000 MSME units will be involved actively in the scheme. He further said about one lakh students will be benefited in the scheme. “One of the major issues that needs to be addressed is availability of skilled manpower to the MSMEs,” he added.
The scheme will assist the MSME sector by sharing the training cost. Under this scheme freshers, who have obtained Engineering Degree, Polytechnic Diploma, ITI certificate in the age group of 18-25 will be given training linked with employment opportunity.
It will be the responsibility of the MSMEs to ensure that for the proposed training and the relevant capacities are available with them. As per this scheme, MSME units will give required skill training to the youth for six months.
During the training period, MSME units will give a stipend of Rs 5000 per month. On completion of the training, of six months, the Government will reimburse an amount of Rs 12,000 to the unit. A total of Rs 2000 per month will be reimbursed by the TNSDC to the MSMEs. Six month will be the upper limit for the financial support. Further, on completion of the training successfully after six months, the National Skill Development Corporation (NSDC) will assess the skill acquired by the trained candidates and issue necessary certificates.
