2 men held for beating hearing-impaired daily wager to death

Two persons were arrested in Tiruvannamalai on Tuesday, for beating to death a deaf daily-wage earner, two days after he got into a brawl with the son over previous enmity.

The victim, Elumalai (25), the hearing-impaired son of Uthamajothi, had gone to the house of Venketesan (27) and picked up a quarrel over a long running dispute. Panicked by this, Venketesan and his family went into the house locked the doors from inside.

When Venketesan did not open the door even after repeated banging, an enraged Elumalai bolted the door from outside and left the spot. Venkatesan, who realised that the door had been locked from outside, came out of the house through the rear entrance.

On Tuesday, when Elumalai was passing by their house, Venketesan and his father-in-law Sekar (55) accosted Elumalai and picked an altercation with him for locking doors of his house. The father-son duo then attacked Elumalai and carried him to the backyard of their house, where they tied him to a tree and thrashed. Unable to bear the assault, Elumalai died on the spot. Thereafter, they dumped Elumalai’s body in front of his house.

Neighbours alerted the Pernamaluur police, who rushed to the spot, recovered the body and sent it to the Arni government hospital for post mortem. Police registered a case and arrested Venketesan and Sekar, who were remanded by the Arni court on Wednesday.
