Justice A D Jagadish Chandira, before whom the plea came up, adjourned it after Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption sought time to obtain sanction from the government to initiate prosecution against the local administration minister as per the amendment made to the Prevention of Corruption Act on July 26.

DMK’s organising secretary RS Bharathi had sought the court to constitute a special investigation team to probe the alleged corruption by Velumani in awarding government contracts.

It may be noted that during the earlier hearing DMK’s counsel N R Elango had submitted that since the government itself was accused in the present case, the sanction for prosecution must be obtained from the Governor and not the government.

This was refuted by advocate General Vijay Narayan who was keen on placing his submissions that in the present case, it was the government which is the sanctioning authority.
