In a major haul, foreign currencies worth Rs 90L seized at Madurai airport
In one of the major and rare hauls of currencies of different countries, sleuths attached to the air intelligence unit of Customs department seized US dollars, Saudi riyals, UAE dirhams and Euros all working out to around Rs 90 lakh from two persons.

While the foreign currencies, which totalled to Rs. 89.12 lakh, were seized from Rabeek Raja of Madurai, Rs 30 lakh in Indian currency was seized from Prem Nazir of Chennai, assistant commissioner of customs, A Venkadesh Babu said. Subsequently, two cases were booked against the duo, who have been arrested. This is one of the high-value seizures involving foreign currencies at Madurai airport, the assistant commissioner of customs said.
Sleuths intercepted the two passengers when they were about to board a Singapore-bound flight, which was scheduled to take off at Madurai airport at 11.45 p.m. on Monday. Among the seized foreign currencies were US dollars, Saudi riyal, UAE dirham and Euro currency. The currencies were concealed in three carton boxes, the Assistant Commissioner said.
Regarding the seizure of Indian currency, the Customs official said that there were proper bank documents to support the amount of Rs 30 lakh to be carried outside the country.
Any passenger carrying cash should produce bank declaration and then carry it with them, the official explained.
