The action comes days after the TFPC president lodged a police complaint charging that 10 theatres were reportedly supporting piracy activities on their premises.
Speaking to the reporters, Tiruchy and Thanjavur theatre owners association president Meenakshi Sundaram said, “Without proper verification, Vishal lodged a complaint against some cinema theatres claiming that they were allowing their premises to make pirated CDs of latest Tamil movies. He even announced not to provide KDM (Key Delivery Message) licence to the theatres listed in his complaint for screening new movies. It is a baseless allegation and he has not shown proof. No theatre owner will allow such activities.”
Of the 140 members of the Theatre Owners Association of Tiruchy and Thanjavur, 40 theatres were planning to release Vishal’s Sandakozhi 2. After Wednesday decision, all the 40 theatres have decided not to screen Sandakozhi 2, he added. He said that theatre owners in Tiruchy and Thanjavur have informed their decision to the Tamil Nadu theatre owners association, which in reply said that similar move has been made by 350 more theatres.
Pointing out that the theatre owners also wanted to put a permanent end the piracy menace, he said, “Vishal should work hand in hand with theatre owners if he is keen to curb piracy. But, the TFPC is trying to portray us as thieves. This is unacceptable.”
