Presenting a one-year temporary recognition certificate to 308 matriculation schools in Vellore, Tiruvannamalai, Dharmapuri and Krishnagiri districts at a function organised in Vellore, he said, “The certificates will authorise the matric schools to be announced as examination centres in addition to enabling them to get official sanction to operate school buses.”

Though it was planned to provide a three-year recognition certificate, the government was forced to opt for one-year stipulation due to court orders, the minister said.

Referring to Vellore Collector SA Raman’s request to schools to save water and refrain from plastic use, Sengottaiyan called on schools to practise the water harvesting system. He also added that Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami would soon announce a plan to construct check dams in various places in the State to save water.

On the school front, he said 672 government schools in Tamil Nadu would soon be provided with science labs on a par with private institutions at an estimated

cost of Rs 20 lakh per lab this year.

Also, laptops would also be provided to Class IX students this year. A total of 11.70 lakh higher secondary students would be provided with the gadgets, he added.

“Earlier the department had assured internet access to computers in school, the works for the same is underway and will be completed soon. Also new uniforms planned for government school students from next year will be on par with those in vogue in private schools,” he added.

Collector Raman in his address said that a total of 308 matriculation schools, including 109 in Vellore district, 64 in Tiriuvannamalai district, 81 in Krishnagiri district and 54 in Dharmapuri district would benefit by the government’s move.
