The previous version of FACTS was outdated, as fingerprints of suspects had to be sent to headquarters in Chennai for comparison on FACTS whether they have already been involved in any crime. Now, they could be compared at the district units itself, as the database has been centralised and connected to all the district units via web. This system was developed by Tata Consultancy Services at the cost of Rs 1.7 crore.

Fingerprint slips of those arrested as well as that of convicted persons can be uploaded to the server from the district units itself. Also, chance prints of criminals lifted from scenes of crimes can be scanned and results can be obtained immediately in the updated system.

While the data warehouse would have about 5 lakh fingerprint slips, it could be increased to 20 lakhs. The new system would also support live fingerprint capturing through Finger Print Enrolment Devices (FED). The experts in districts and city police commissionerates have been trained to use the latest version.

Speaking to DT Next, Seema Agarwal, ADGP (SCRB), said that the new system would soon be extended to all police stations to enable the personnel to verify the antecedents of suspects using their fingerprints at the station itself.
