Capital punishment for three in rape case

According to the prosecution, the trio identified as P Sundarraj (25) of Ambedkar Colony, Kamatchipuram, E Robin alias Ravi (23) and P Kumaresan (19), were found guilty of raping the girl before murdering her. 

The incident occurred at 4.30 pm on December 1, 2014, when the girl was walking alone near her house at Kamatchipuram. Sources said that the three accused gagged the girl, who lost her consciousness, and gang raped her. After committing the crime, the accused dumped the body of the victim in a well near Kamatchipuram.

Acting on a complaint lodged by Kaleeswari, mother of the victim, Odaipatti police of Uthamapalayam sub-division, initially registered a ‘missing’ case on December 2, 2014. Later, the case was altered to Section 302 (murder) of IPC and Section 6 of POCSO Act, 2012. After a detailed investigation, three persons were arrested on December 4, 2014 and lodged in Madurai central prison. 

The investigation team filed a 107-page chargesheet on July 22, 2015, in connection with the gangrape and murder. To support the charges against the three accused, the investigators also submitted a biological report to the court. 

Based on the evidence provided by the police, fast track mahila court Judge V Thilagam convicted and awarded death sentence to the trio for murdering the girl. 

Apart from the capital punishment, the judge also sentenced them to undergo life imprisonment for gangraping the girl and slapped a fine of Rs 50,000 on each of the convicts.

Superintendent of Police V Baskaran lauded the efforts of the investigation team, which resulted in conviction.
