Farmers, who came to know about the visit of the additional secretary, rushed to the spot and complained to him that they have not received adequate water for cultivation as the damage to the regulator had severely affected the flow to their region.Â
Balaji, who gave a patient hearing to their grievances, assured the farmers that he would convey their problems to the State government and try to get them redressed.
M P Chinnadurai, district president of Tamizhaga Vivasayigal Sangam, said the State government must initiate steps to curb sand mining activities on the Kollidam as that was the major reason for the collapse of the old Mukkombu barrage.Â
Puliyur A Nagarajan, president of TMC (farmers’ wing), while suggesting that the proposed barrage across the Upper Anicut must have a capacity to store at least two tmc, said that the new bridge should be wide enough for easy movement of heavy vehicles.
Discharge reduced following rains in delta
Meanwhile, the discharge from the Mettur dam was reduced as rain lashed many parts of delta districts for the second day on Wednesday. The release, which was maintained at 20,000 cusecs on Tuesday evening, was curtailed to 18,000 cusecs from Wednesday morning.
