An authority attached to the PWD (Mines) said, “It took us five days to unload the consignment from the vessel - Aurelia. As per standing operation procedure, we have sent a few samples of the sand to the laboratory under our jurisdiction. The tests will include assessment of the strength and quality among the various aspects.”

The vessel Aurelia arrived from the Pekan Port and berthed at Chettinad International Bulk Terminal. Subsequently, the imported sand by the IRVS Resources Private Limited for the PWD was unloaded in Kamarajar Port (KPL) in Ennore. The KPL has allotted an open land of 1.5 acre to South India Corporation Private Limited for the storage of the river sand.

An official said, “The unloading operation was carried out with the help of two mobile cranes of Chettinad International Bulk Terminal. The PWD is planning to deliver the consignment at the doorstep of the customers. It is our first pilot project and we are not planning to take any profit from it. A nominal price will be fixed with an aim to serve the people better.”

“We are planning to hold the sample test for each delivery of consignment. The imported sand is so pure and fit for the construction of buildings,” he added.

The first consignment of the river sand reached the Chennai port on 22 September after the vessel missed its date due to bad weather condition. The PWD floated a tender to private players to import nearly 5 lakh tonne at the cost of Rs 550 crore.
