    TNSCST launches research funding for students

    In a first such initiative, the Tamil Nadu State Council for Science and Technology (TNSCST) will provide research funding for college students.

    Accordingly, this unique programme wherein the selected research students in the colleges will be provided with not only research funding but also opportunity to carry out socially relevant studies, so that they make meaningful contribution to the society.

    Speaking to DT Next, a senior TNSCST official said that although the number of higher educational and research institutions in the State is growing every year, research funding is not available for the deserving students.

    “If the gap in research funding is addressed, it will pave way for many innovative ideas to be tested and it would yield not only research data but also help improve scientific manpower,” he said.

    “Particularly, colleges and institutions in rural areas are at a disadvantage when compared to those which are able to attract project funding through various schemes of central agencies,” the official said.

    He said a sum of Rs 10,000 per month would be provided as stipend for two years to those selected as research scholars.

    “An additional sum of Rs 60,000 would be provided towards purchase of required items, travel, contingencies and other expenses related to their research work,” the official added.

    Explaining the selection process, the official said all the proposals received from the students would be evaluated by an expert committee constituted for this programme.

    Suitable proposals recommended by the committee will be considered for funding. After the council approves, the grant will be released to the concerned colleges.

    After completion of the project, the research students will be provided with patent facilitation form along with their official approval of the research activities.

    “In addition, best research projects will receive an award and completion certificate to encourage the students to carry out further research activities,” the official said. The State government has recently has allocated Rs 30 lakh to the council for the
