Counsel confident of Murugan and Nalini release
“We have high hopes that all the seven accused convicted in the former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi assassination case will be released soon,” said V Pugazhendhi, lawyer of Murugan and his wife Nalini, after meeting the couple at Vellore central prison on Saturday.
Chennai
Nalini and her husband Murugan, both were accused and convicted in the former prime minister Rajiv Gandhi assassination case. They are currently serving their life imprisonment in the Vellore central prison.
Pugazhendhi said that his hopes are high since the state government has accepted the Supreme Court’s dictate. Also, Tamil Nadu Government has also forwarded its plea backing the release of the convicts, to the Tamil Nadu Governor Banwarilal Purohit, he added.
Adding to this, the lawyer said that he has come to visit his clients to consult the next course of action.
When questioned on the delay in granting the release of the convicts, he said government machinery worked like that.
To the question on the letter written by co-convict Santhan to the home secretary on the same, Pugazhendhi said it will not have any bearing. Further, he said that both the anticipated Governor’s action and Santhan’s letter carries the same aim- to release the convicted who have already spent 27 years in prison.
