While the department had transferred officials of Puzhal Prison-I (convicts’ prison) on Monday, nine officials, including two chief head warders, of Prison-II (remand prison) were moved out on Tuesday.

According to a communication from the department, K Vetrivel, chief head warden, Puzhal Prison II, has been transferred to Vaniyambadi sub-jail, while K Kannadhasan, another chief head warder, has been asked to assume office in a Borstal school in Ginjee in Villupuram district. Their superiors were instructed to give non-sensitive assignments to these warders as their ‘integrity was doubtful’.

The warders who were shunted out along with them were: A Kiruba Jeyasingh Ponraj, L Suriya Narayanan, K Selvan, L Raj Kumar, L Starlin Edison, A Immanuel and M Serinthayapillai. All the officers were to be immediately relieved and were asked to join at the new place at once.

The sudden, mass transfer of 17 staff from Puzhal Central Prison in last two days was triggered by media reports, accompanied with photographs, on lavish life style of certain inmates in the prison, which appeared last week.

After DT Next carried the report last Thursday, senior officers carried out inspection at the prison and removed as many as 18 televisions sets, connections of which were used to charge mobiles phones, a banned item in the prisons. As many as five inmates were also shifted from the Puzhal prison premises.
