The five accused, Jafar Safiq Ali (29), Ismayil (25) from, Samsudeen (20), Shalavuddin (25) and Ashik (25), had recently arrived in Coimbatore with a plan to allegedly kill Hindu Makkal Katchi (HMK) leader Arjun Sampath and Sakthi Sena leader Anbu Mari.

They were arrested under various sections including Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act. Ismayil was alleged to be an agent of a terrorist organisation and is believed to have hatched the murder conspiracy. Enquiries have revealed crucial information, based on which, police are expected to crack down on others soon.

As their five-day custody ended on Monday, the accused persons were produced before the court, following which, they were lodged at the Coimbatore Central Prison.

Meanwhile, the family members of the accused persons arrested in connection with the murder of Hindu Munnani spokesperson C Sasikumar petitioned Collector TN Hariharan, alleging that they were being harassed by NIA sleuths under the pretext of enquiry.

Four persons, Mubarak from KK Pudur, S Saddam Hussain of Karunanidhi Nagar, S Zubair of GM Nagar and Syed Abu Dhakir from Karumbukadai, were arrested in connection with the murder of the Hindu outfit leader.

The relatives of the arrested persons claimed that though investigations were over in this connection and a charge sheet was already filed, the NIA sleuths were still un-wantonly harassing their family members.
