Government jobs: In-house exam coaching for disabled

The Tiruvannamalai district administration for the first time started a two-month in-house residential training programme for the differently-abled to prepare them for competitive exams. “We came up with this idea based on the petitions we received from the community seeking government jobs. After a lot of brainstorming we realised that many of them are unable to clear the competitive exams for these government jobs, due to lack of formal training,” the Collector explained.

The training programme kick-started on Friday, with the Collector himself handling the first class. During the session he briefed the participants on what they could expect from this free coaching.

In addition to boarding and lodging facilities, the candidates will be provided with meals three times a day and two tea breaks. A library that houses books on various competitive exams, school text books from class 6 to class 12 will also be accessible. This facility aims to enable candidates to understand and get their basic concepts right.

Speaking about the funds involved for the training programme, the Collector said, “The building where the programme is conducted - Yatri Nivas – belongs to the district administration. We have roped in various NGOs, who have accepted to sponsor needs of candidates.”

Stating that plans were on to conduct the coaching programme throughout the year, he said, “The first batch has 27 participants, including 11 women as of now. Only when we get more candidates, the programme will be a success.”

The classes from 10 am to 1 pm will focus on various subjects, importance will also be given to Mathematics, Tamil, general knowledge and current affairs. “In the weekends, subject experts from Chennai will handle classes.

Weekly tests are planned and when the programme concludes, students will write a three model exam. Candidates would be trained on how to attend interviews and participate in group discussions,” said Kandasamy.
