TN women robbed again at Ongole station
Ongole railway station seems to have become a haven for thieves as two more Tamil Nadu-bound women passengers were targeted on Saturday. They lost a gold chain weighing seven sovereigns, a handbag containing Rs 25,000 in cash, mobile phone, debit and credit cards. This is the third heist in express trains near Ongole in just a week.
While the victims of the previous incidents were unaware of the thefts as they were asleep, on Saturday, the passengers of Tamil Nadu Express woke up when the thieves tried to snatch their chains. One of them, Geetha Ramyasree, 22, is from West Godavari district while her husband Sudhir is a loco pilot for Sapthagiri Express. The couple stays in Tiruvottiyur and was returning from their hometown.
When the train stopped in Ongole around 3 am, Geetha felt a hand on her neck and awoke to find man standing outside the window. Even before she could raise an alarm, he escaped with her handbag. She was on the side lower berth. While this incident took place in coach S3, a 35-year-old woman from Thanjavur lost her gold chain to an unidentified man in coach S4. The victim, Mythili, was returning from Delhi after participating in a sports festival, the police said. Mythili, who also woke up at the nick of time managed to save her mangalsutra while the robber escaped with the chain attached to the mangalsutra.
Based on their complaint, the railway police at Chennai Central registered a case and forwarded them to Ongole police, since the incidents took place in their jurisdiction. Police have also forwarded the details of the passengers to Ongole DSP.
