No role for Centre in Rajiv case: Ponnar
Pon Radhakrishnan, Union Minister of State for Road Transport, Highways and Shipping said the Governor of the state would decide on his own on the release of Rajiv case convicts and he distanced the Centre from the case.
He was talking to reporters after taking part in the ‘Swachhata Hi Seva Movement,’ a programme organised by the Bharatiya Janata Party at Government Ayurveda Medical College in Nagercoil on Saturday.
The Minister cleaned up some portions on the premises of the college. Referring to the release of the Rajiv killers, he told reporters that during the last week, Supreme Court directed the state Governor Banwarilal Purohit to take a decision on a petition filed by Perarivalan, one of the convicts. The Tamil Nadu Cabinet recommended the release of these convicts in the case to the Governor. “He (Governor) will decide keeping the sentiments of the convicts’ relatives,” Radhakrishnan said.
Moreover, he also sought stern action against authorities in Puzhal Central Prison, in which inmates were allegedly enjoying luxury of comfort in cells. He said mere transfer of posts would not be a solution to this issue, but should take serious action against those found guilty.
