S Selvakumar (46), a former district panchayat councillor, ran a furniture showroom in Perambalur town. He had reportedly befriended S Sathya (40), who ran a beauty parlour near the old bus stand in Perambalur, over 10 years ago. Selvakumar had allegedly given Sathya Rs 5 lakh to upgrade his beauty parlour.

Meanwhile, Sathya reportedly befriended another party functionary and started avoiding Selvakumar, which affected their friendship. Thereafter, Selvakumar started insisting Sathya to return his money.

On August 17, Selvakumar had gone to the parlour and had asked her for the money, which led to a heated argument between the two. Selvakumar reportedly thrashed Sathya and the entire episode was recorded on the security camera that was installed in the parlour.

Subsequently, Sathya had lodged a police complaint, however, no case was filed against Selvakumar as he was a local influential person.

Subsequently, Sathya, approached the media, who screened the footage and it was also circulated on the social media. Later, Perambalur police registered a case and arrested the accused. Selvakumar was produced before a magistrate court and then lodged in a jail in the town.

Meanwhile, Selvakumar, who was brought to Perambalur government hospital for medical check-up before being jailed, said, “DMK’s town secretary Prabhakaran was behind the entire episode.”. However, the party high command suspended Selvakumar from the party.

While issuing the suspension order, DMK president MK Stalin warned, “Whoever engages in rowdy acts, intimidates people by taking law unto their own hands and intemperance against women would be dealt with under the rules of the party.”
