South districts sweat it out as wind power output crashes

The drastic fall in wind power generation has caused power outage in parts of the southern districts of Tamil Nadu. Apart from the decline in energy from wind turbines leading to power cuts, the increased electricity consumption in recent days was also the cause for load shedding.

According to sources, as on Tuesday morning, the State’s electricity consumption touched 13,506 MW. On April 27, the State consumed as much as 15 440 MW electricity against the total installed capacity of 18,000 MW.

According to Tamil Nadu Wind Energy Forecast, the dry climate would continue for a few more days and the generation of power from wind turbines would be below 500 MW.

On windy days in the month of July, the generation touched its peak with an output of 107.32 million units a day. Further, sources said that 1,500 MW capacity wind mill stations would come up in Thoothukudi and Tirunelveli soon.

“As for solar power energy generation, its daily average generation over a week is 1,790 MW against the installed capacity of 2,140 MW in Tamil Nadu,” the sources added. To cater to the increasing demand for power, all five units of Tuticorin Thermal Power Station, each with a capacity of 210 MW, are being functional, sources said.
