Jewels worth several crores, document seized from house of Motor Vehicle inspector’s assistant
Sleuths of Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption (DVAC) seized jewels worth a whopping Rs 5 crore and documents from the house of an assistant to motor vehicle inspector, on late Tuesday night.
Coimbatore
The motor vehicle inspector Babu (55) and his assistant Senthil Kumar, 45, were arrested by the DVAC sleuths for taking a bribe of Rs 25,000 to issue registration certificate for a van in Villupuram district.
Senthil Kumar’s house was raided on the day when he had organised the house warming ceremony, on Wednesday. “It was a palatial house built for over Rs 1 crore. It is beyond one’s capacity for a person, in his position to accumulate so much of wealth,” said a DVAC official.
A team of DVAC sleuths began to search at his house in Attur on Tuesday night and left only in the early Wednesday morning. As many as 16 bank account books in his name and that of his wife Kavitha, 110 sovereigns, Rs 3 crore worth documents of houses and land, but owned by others were seized during the raid.
The DVAC sleuths estimate the total seizure to be worth over Rs 5 crore.
Police said Senthil Kumar’s father Kasilingam had worked as an assistant to Babu, while he was serving in Attur. Later, when Babu was transferred to Kallakurichi, Senthil joined him as an assistant and doubled up as a broker for illegal activities. “Senthil would get 20 per cent commission on the dealings. He is said to have invested the money in chit funds and had bank deposits. Everything is being probed,” said an official.
