According to officials, all the six were final-year students of Muthurangam Government Arts College (Autonomous) and were identified as C Ajith, V Suresh, Kiran, K Vignesh, M Padayappa and S Manikandan.

Sources said that they had ragged their junior students on the hostel premises and the incident was reported to the anti-ragging committee of the college. After the charges against them were found to be true, they were suspended from the college from August 29 to September 9.

As the incident took place in the hostel, the Vellore district administration ordered the expulsion in order to prevent escalation of the problem between senior students and the juniors. Collector Raman ordered to send them out of the government Adi Dravidar welfare hostel.
