Cabinet resolves to urge Centre for naming Central Railway Station after MGR
To commemorate the birth centenary of former Chief Minister MG Ramachandran alias MGR, the state government on Sunday adapted a resolution to name the Central Railway Station after the former chief minister.
Chennai
“The state government would insist the Union government to rename Chennai Central Railway station as MGR Central Railway station,” read the resolution.
The decision of the state government to name Chennai Central Railway station after MGR follows their earlier decision to rename the famous Mattuthavani bus stand in Madurai after MGR. The state government, which is celebrating the MGR centenary function, at the cost of Rs 500 crore, had organised MGR centenary meetings in all the districts and in every meeting important resolution on MGR is being passed.
Other two major resolutions passed in the Cabinet meeting were to impress upon the Union government to give Bharat Ratna for former chief ministers CN Annadurai and J Jayalalithaa.
“The demand for Bharat Ratna to Amma (Jayalalithaa) was first placed in December, 2016, after her death and once again the state government pressed the same demand with the Union government,” said State Fisheries Minister D Jayakumar after the cabinet meeting.
However, similar resolution demanding the Centre to award the Bharat Ratna for Periyar, Annadurai and Jayalalithaa was earlier passed in the Executive Council (EC) meeting of the AIADMK. But in the Cabinet meeting the resolution for Bharat Ratna was moved only for Annadurai and Jayalalithaa, excluding the name of Periyar.
Resolutions
- To free seven convicts in Rajiv Gandhi assassination case
- Bharat Ratna for Annadurai
- To name Chennai Central Railway Station after MGR
- Bharat Ratna for Jayalalitha
