    NEET coaching will be more effective, vows Minister

    Minister for School Education KA Sengottaiyan inaugurated a National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) coaching centre at Government Girls School in Pavoorchathram, Tirunelveli district on Friday in the presence of Collector Shilpa Prabhakar Satish.

    A total of 412 coaching centres for NEET aspirants have come into existence across the state and among them, 22 centres exist in Tirunelveli district. As many as 3,500 teachers, who had been provided with required training, were deputed to coach the NEET aspirants, the Minister said after the inauguration. 

    Last year, a total of 1.13 lakh students took the NEET exam and 1,472 students cleared it. However, only 24 students got admission to medical colleges. Further, he said adequate infrastructure would be created to ensure 2 lakh students take the test and a letter had been sent to Central government in this regard. With effective coaching in these centres, efforts would be taken to increase the strength of students, who wish to join medical colleges. 

    The Minister further said that the new state board syllabus has been framed on a par with the CBSE. Moreover, he said language skills of students of Class 6, 7 and 8 would be honed. 

    Calling upon women teachers to report cases of sexual harassment if any, the Minister asked them to lodge a complaint through toll free number ‘14417.’ 

    The Minister also visited MDT Hindu College Higher Secondary School in Tirunelveli, where Tamil poet Subramania Bharathi studied.  He also inaugurated a Government High School in Thulukarpatti, which has been upgraded to higher secondary school. 

    Earlier, the Minister flagged off trucks that carried relief material to the flood affected Kerala. Relief material collected by the School Education Ministry from various districts including Tirunelveli, Thoothukudi, Kanniyakumari, Madurai, Sivaganga, Ramnad, Pudukottai, Theni and Virudhunagar worth Rs 1.6 crore was sent by twenty two trucks. In the first phase, relief material worth Rs 2.60 crore was sent to Kerala, he added.
