As Kerala eyes rehabilitation, TN experts help contain diseases
With the relief operations in Kerala switching to the long-term rehabilitation phase, the Tamil Nadu government has sent essential medicines including insulin in two phases. Also a large amounts of bleaching powder was sent to Kerala to check the breeding of mosquitoes.

Besides, experts from the health department also conducted medical camps there and have been checking the spread of water borne diseases in the state.
Stating that the Department of Public Health is working in coordination with the Kerala government, Dr K Kolandaisamy, Director of the Department said, “We are helping them in whatever way they want. Following their requests, we also sent 10 entomological and eight epidemiological teams there.
They are working in close coordination with the government. We are sharing our experience in Chennai, Tiruvallur, Kancheepuram, Cuddalore including the experience we gained in Kanyakumari. Hence, they are taking serious measures to control the problems.”
He said that leptospirosis is one of the problems that Keralites are faced with. “They are attending to it as of now. While we have assured them of help in case of requirement for investigations at the King Institute in Guindy, until now they have been able to handle all cases,” he added.
It may be noted that the state government have sent medicines worth Rs. 2.2 crore in two phases. There was a lot insulin that was in demand.
Besides, chlorine tablets and 100 tonnes of bleaching powder were also sent, said a health official.
“There have been requests for more bleaching powder which will be sent to Kerala shortly. As of now, we have ensured them support in the form of the 18 teams that have been sent,” added Dr Kolandaisamy.
