Ex-fiancée drags TN IPS officer to Supreme Court on cheating and dowry charges
More than a month after the Madras High Court quashed criminal proceedings pending against Tamil Nadu IPS officer, RV Varun Kumar, his former fiancée-turned-complainant, G Priyadarshini, has approached the Supreme Court.
Chennai
Priyadarshini, who had fought against Kumar after he allegedly cheated her by demanding a huge dowry and calling off their marriage after she refused to pay up, said that the apex court wanted to examine the matter in detail and that the case has been listed for hearing next week.
Kumar was arrested and suspended during the probe against him. His suspension was later revoked and he is now working under probation as ASP. During the course of the case, he married an IPS woman officer of TN cadre while Priyadarshini married a lawyer.
In July, Justice MS Ramesh of Madras High Court allowed the plea filed by the IPS officer to be quashed stating that the case was a classic example of a maliciously instituted criminal proceeding.
Priyadarshini and Varun, who had known each other since 2007, had enrolled themselves in an IAS Training Academy at New Delhi. Even though Priyadarshini failed to clear the examination, stayed back in New Delhi to help Varun to prepare for his.
Later, their parents accepted the relationship and finalised a marriage date for 2012. But in April 2011, after his interview, Kumar and his parents’ attitude towards Priyadarshini and her family allegedly changed and they demanded Rs 50 lakh in cash, 2 kg gold and a BMW car if her parents wanted to go ahead with the marriage plans.
When Priyadharshini expressed her inability to meet the demand, the Kumars called off the marriage after which, she lodged a complaint with the Chennai police against the IPS officer citing cheating and dowry demands.
