Acting on a tip-off Ambur taluk civil supplies officials, led by Taluk Supply Officer (TSO) Maheswari, were conducting checks on vehicles on the road leading to Pernambut town on Tamil Nadu–Andhra Pradesh border. They noticed more than 30 bags of PDS rice weighing around two tonnes abandoned at a spot on Palli Street. Officials recovered the consignment and sent it to the Tamil Nadu Civil Supplies Corporation godown. Further enquiries are on to find out who placed the rice bags at the spot.

After the railway police stepped up the vigil to stop the illegal activity, smugglers have now changed their tactic and have switched over to road transport via Pernambut.
