After MK Stalin was elected as DMK's president, the party has scrapped the working president post. The post, in first case was formed and MK Stalin was appointed in that post as the party's then president M Karunanidhi was not able to engage in party activities.

MK Stalin was the chosen political heir of M Karunanidhi for the party, and has been managing the party works for more than a year as his 94-year-old father was not participating in public life due to failing health.

The position of DMK president remained vacant since the demise of M Karunanidhi earlier this month.

MK Stalin filed his nomination at Anna Arivalayam, the party headquarters, in Chennai on Sunday. Similarly, Durai Murugan also filed nomination for the post of treasurer of the party, which was previously held by MK Stalin.

MK Stalin became the party's president unopposed as no other nomination received for the post.

MK Stalin is the second president of the DMK. His father led the party for 49 years. DMK founder CN Annadurai, who had founded the party, had left the position vacant for his mentor Periyar. After the demise of Annadurai, M Karunanidhi was elected as the party's president.
