4-year-old falls into Cauvery during dad’s selfie bid
Obsession with selfies reached a new low on Tuesday after a four-year-old boy, Danwanth, slipped into the gushing waters of the Cauvery while his father Babu was taking a selfie with his son perched on the parapet of a bridge in Namakkal district. The boy had celebrated his birthday on Monday.

Danwanth was a UKG student and Babu is a share market trader from LGP Nagar.
Police said the incident occurred when Babu was taking his son to school in Karur. “On the way, Danwanth was persistent in wanting to visit the Mohanur-Vangal Bridge to take a look at the flooded Cauvery. He had loved the view when his parents had taken him to the same spot on his birthday,” an officer said. “Babu was holding his son by the left arm and suddenly lost grip while taking the selfie and Danwanth fell into the gushing water,” the officer added.
On receiving information, the Mohanur police and Fire and Rescue personnel rushed to the spot and launched search operations. They went as far as Mayanur barrage, almost 15 km away from the spot of the tragic fall. They said the boy must have been washed away due to strong currents. Meanwhile, inflow into the Mettur dam dropped to less than 80,000 cusecs on Tuesday. As the water flow came down, traffic on the Mettur-Edappadi road resumed to normalcy.
