Due to extensive rainfall in Kerala and Karnataka, Mettur dam received over two lakh cusecs on Saturday and along with waters from Amaravathi and Bhavanisagar dams, the water flow in Cauvery river is set to touch three lakh cusecs. Because of the flood, many habitations were inundated and close to 13,000 people were shifted to rescue camps.

In the entire Cauvery basin, Erode, Namakkal, Karur, Nagapattinam and Cuddalore districts were the worst affected. Many of the villages have been marooned because of flood waters.

To take stock of the flood situation and to check the status of rescue camps, Palaniswami is set to visit Bhavani and Karungalpalayam, in Erode district and Kumarapalayam and Pallipalayam in Namakkal district. In Kumarapalayam, Cauvery river is flowing at a dangerous level where many temples have also submerged, according to reports.

After the field visit, Palaniswami is set to hold talks with the officials and will assess the situation in a meeting planned at the government circuit house in Erode. Palaniswami will first leave for Coimbatore in a flight and will reach the flood-affected areas by road.

Revenue Minister RB Udhaya Kumar told reporters in Madurai that if needed National Disaster Response Force personnel would be requistioned and added that the State Disaster Response force personnel have already been posted in districts along the banks of Cauvery.
