In Tiruchy, there was a large gathering of devotees at Amma Mandapam. They performed a series of rituals in memory of their ancestors and took a holy dip in the Cauvery river.
The Tiruchy corporation made temporary arrangements for the convenience of the public. Police were deployed along with the fire and rescue service personnel as the Cauvery was flowing full.
Devotees also thronged the Sri Ramanathaswamy Temple in Rameswaram and offered prayers. After performing the rituals, they took a holy dip at the Agni Theertham. Around five hundred police personnel were deployed near the temple, sources said.
Ramanathapuram Principal District Judge A Kayalvizhi made a surprise visit to the Agni Theertham shore and interacted with temple priests and devotees. She held enquiries following complaints of devotees being charged extra for the rituals, besides verifying the identity cards of priests.
Sub-Judge Ramalingam and members of District Legal Services Authority accompanied Kayalvizhi during her visit, sources said.
A huge crowd was also seen at the Subramaniya Swamy Temple in Tiruchendur. Similar scenes were witnessed in water bodies in Kanniyakumari, Thoothukudi and Tirunelveli districts.
