Farmers from Pattukkottai and Peravurani in the district said that the water has not reached them due to the failure of the Public Works Department (PWD) in undertaking desilting works.

Agitated over this, they staged a road roko in front of the post office in Pattukkottai on Monday, demanding authorities to step up release of water. On information, the PWD officials held talks with the agitating farmers.

Meanwhile, another section of farmers said their lands were affected after the recent breach in the Grand Anaicut canal.

Led by T Ramachandran of Kalvirayanpettai, the farmers submitted a petition on grievances redressal day, demanding reclamation of the lands affected in the area, besides repairing the banks of Konavari canal, damaged by the flood water which was released from the Grand Anaicut canal.

They said they could not take up cultivation in around hundreds of acres due to the breach. The road in the area was also damaged in many places.

The farmers also wanted authorities to desilt the Konavari canal so that water could flow through it for samba cultivation. The Public Works Department officials assured the farmers that they would visit the spot and take necessary action in a day or two.
