Speaking prior to his departure to New Delhi at the airport, the 63-year-old said that though there has been speculation doing the rounds that he had sent signals to the Congress party for an alliance, as claimed by the Tamil Nadu Congress Committee president Su Thirunavukkarasar, he clarified that it was merely a rumour as he had not sent any message from his side.

Kamal also called for the conduct of the local body elections in Tamil Nadu and promised that Makkal Needhi Maiam would endeavour to pressurise the government to hold the civic polls soon.

The Vishwaroopam star forayed into politics with the formation of his party Makkal Needhi Maiam on February 24 this year. He has since met with various political leaders, including Rahul Gandhi and Sonia Gandhi, Karnataka Chief Minister HD Kumaraswamy, Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan and Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal.
