Teachers ask students to hold umbrella at sports meet, face heat
District Chief Educational Officer (CEO) S Mars has ordered an enquiry into two separate incidents of government school teachers ordering students to hold umbrellas over them at sports meet held at Arakkonam and Vellore.
Vellore
In the first incident, a video recording of which went viral on social media, a teacher ordered her wards to hold an umbrella over her for protecting her from the intense heat during the divisional sports meet held at Arakkonam on Wednesday.
The second incident took place at the Nethaji stadium in Vellore on Friday. A woman teacher reportedly ordered two girls to hold an umbrella over her head at the quarterly sports meet conducted by Sports Development Authority of Tamil Nadu (SDAT). The teacher’s behaviour reportedly upset other participants, more so when it was noticed that there was no body to help Odugathur Government High School sprinter Sneha when she fell while running due to severe cramps. Her friends came to her aid and did their best to ease her pain.
When contacted, CEO Mars said he had ordered the Arakkonam DEO to enquire into the Arakkonam incident, while the Vellore issue would also be looked into. “If found true, then the school heads would be asked to initiate action against the respective teachers,” he added.
