Party sources, who confirmed the development, told DT Next that doctors made him sit in the wheelchair for 30 minutes, understandably, to help Karunanidhi avoid bedsores. However, Kauvery Hospital has not issued an official statement on shifting the DMK chief, who remains bed ridden since his admission in the intensive care unit on July 28.

The hospital has not issued a bulletin on the DMK chief’s health since Tuesday evening when it had revealed that extent of deterioration in the former chief minister’s health condition by admitting that the overall health condition of Karunanidhi declined due to age factor. The bulletin had also disclosed that Karunanidhi’s liver function and hematological parameters have been altered.

Remarkably, the nonagenarian’s vital signs have been normalising since Monday midnight. Even on Thursday, party sources who visited the hospital, said the condition was stable and he was responding well to drugs administered for infections, which has renewed the hopes of DMK cadre who have been celebrating following the improvement recorded during the last couple of days. Earlier in the day, Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan visited the hospital and enquired with DMK working president MK Stalin and Rajya Sabha Kanimozhi about their father’s health.

“Kalaignar is a born fighter who has fought many battles. I hope Kalaignar will recover fast from his illness,” the office of Kerala Chief Minister tweeted later.

Meanwhile, Sri Lankan Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe on Thursday spoke to DMK working president Stalin over phone and enquired about M Karunanidhi’s health. “This evening in India I spoke with MK Stalin, son of DMK Leader M Karunanidhi. who is currently in hospital,” the Lankan leader said in a tweet.
