6 killed, 3 hurt as luxury car mows into crowd
A speeding luxury SUV ploughed into a crowd waiting at a bus stop killing six people, including three women, on the spot and critically injuring three others in Coimbatore on Wednesday.

The incident occurred when the driver of the SUV, Jagadeesan, 35, a native of Coonoor, lost control of the car at Sundarapuram in Coimbatore. Tragedy struck around 10.20 am when people were waiting for the bus at Iyer Hospital bus stop near Periyar statue. The speeding car mowed into the crowd and hit an auto rickshaw before coming to a halt by crashing into an electric post.
The deceased were identified as N Subhashini, 18, a first year BCom CA student at a private college, V Narayanan, 70, a retired postman, A Srirangadas, 69, a load man, Amsaveni, 34, a flower vendor, Kuppathal, 70 and Rukmani, 65. All werefrom the neighbourhood. Three persons, Somasundaram, 60, Natraj, 70 and Suresh, 42, suffered injuries and were rushed to Coimbatore Medical College and Hospital (CMCH).
The public caught hold of Jagadeesan and thrashed him, before handing him over to the police. He too was injured. Enquiries revealed that Jagadeesan was on his way to pick up the chairman of a private college from his house. The entire incident, caught on CCTV, showed the Puducherry registered car being driven at a speed of 110 km, police said.
City Police Commissioner K Periaiah visited the spot and supervised rescue efforts. “The mishap occurred due to reckless driving. We have arrested the accused under stringent IPC Section 304(II) (culpable homicide not amounting to murder). His licence has also been cancelled,” Periaiah said.
Coimbatore District Collector TN Hariharan visited the injured persons at CMCH and said that blood samples of the driver had been sent for a lab test testing to ascertain whether he was under the influence of alcohol. The report would be known by Thursday. Coimbatore Deputy Commissioner (Traffic) Sujit Kumar also said a breath analyser test did not detect alcohol in Jagadeesan.

- November 12, 2017: A speeding Chevrolet Cruze car driven by a drunk college student, ran amok and killed an auto driver and injured five others, as it rammed into six auto rickshaws near Stella Maris College.
- December 26, 2017: A speeding luxury car driven by a techie rammed into two motorbikes and a parked car, killing a student. One of the injured persons died later.
