According to Collector S Suresh Kumar, “We have planned 54 DPCs for Kuruvai season this year. In the first phase, 23 have been opened and the rest will be set up in another few days. The centres have been opened after two years, as kuruvai failed in the last couple of seasons.”

Accordingly, five procurement centres were opened in Mayiladuthurai taluk in Ilanthoppu, Manalmedu, Thirumangalam, Kodangudi, Villianallur and five were set up in Sirkazhi taluk at Thiruvenkadu, Thirupangur, Kondal, Kathiramangalam and Mathirivelur.

In Tharangambadi taluk, seven centres were opened in Kadakkam, Kidarankondan, Kidangal, Mukkarumbur, Muthur, Perambur and Sembanarkovil. In Kuthalam taluk, four centers were opened in Pazhaykoodalur, Konaerirajapuram, Keezhaparuthikudi and Karuppur. Two centres were opened in Thirumarugal and Ambal for the convenience of Vennaru belt farmers in Nagapattinam taluk.

Fine variety of paddy will be procured at a minimum support price of Rs 1,660 and the common variety at Rs 1,600 in the DPCs. The district administration has given an option of the online transaction to disburse payment for the procurement.

The crops were cultivated primarily in Cauvery delta region such as Mayiladuthurai, Sirkazhi, Kuthalam, Kollidam, Tharangambadi and also in Vennaru delta region of Thirumarugal where groundwater was used for irrigation.
