According to sources, Srinivasan (46), DMK urban district deputy secretary Srinivasan was using the car of Saravanan belonging to Katpadi panchayat union secretary Saravanan. Meanwhile, Srinivasan’s mother Bhuvaneswari returned home on Thursday night in the car of Saravanan after visiting Tiruvannamalai on Thursday midnight.

A few minutes later, some unidentified persons set fire to the car that was parked in front of the house. Before Srinivasan came out, the miscreants fled the spot. Immediately, Srinivasan informed the fire and rescue services. But, before the personnel reached the house, fire engulfed the car and it went up completely in flames. Srinivasan in a complaint to the police said that it could be the act of the same gang, which had attempted to kill him on July 4.

Acting on his complaint, Virudampattu police registered a case and commenced investigations into the incident. It may be recalled that a gang of five persons attacked Srinivasan with deadly weapons in broad daylight at a tea shop near his house on July 4.

The DMK functionary, who sustained injuries in the attack, managed to escape from the spot on that day. In a similar incident, former Anaicut panchayat union councilor Magendran was hacked to death by a DMK rival in the panchayat union office last month. It is suspected that political rivalry could be the reason behind both the incidents.
