Sterlite case: Kamal helps cadre get bail
Actor-politician Kamal Haasan on Wednesday met with M Sivakumar, a member of his Makkal Needhi Maiam (MNM) party, who was jailed for his efforts in helping the people to safety during the anti-Sterlite protests in Thoothukudi.

Sivakumar had assisted in shifting close to 70 injured people to hospitals in the aftermath of the police firing that left 13 dead. He had been captured on CCTV cameras rushing the injured for treatment. He was arrested by the police and remained in custody for 35 days with 22 cases filed against him. On hearing about his efforts, the MNM leadership helped secure his bail.Â
Meanwhile, the MNM president held a meeting with the representatives of the Colachel Meenavargal Orunginaippalargal Sangam at his Alwarpet office in Chennai on Wednesday. He presented the cheque for the funds that he had promised them during his recent tour of Kanniyakumari district. They also sought Kamal’s support and suggestions for their pilot project that involves improving the wireless communication for the fishermen at sea and building a rescue boat.Â
The fishermen also conveyed the problems that they faced like the lack of adequate information about weather forecasts beyond Tirunelveli. They said the forecasts was much needed. They also told Kamal about the dumping of solid waste into the waters and how the practice affects the fish population, which in turn affects their livelihood.
