On Tuesday, at 8 am, 75,170 cusecs of water were discharged from the dam as it reached 120.40 feet beyond its full reservoir level (FRL). While the dam can hold up to 124 feet, the full reservoir level (FRL)is maintained at 120 feet. PWD officials said that the quantum of discharge will be regulated based on the inflow to the dam. As the inflow is around 75,000 cusecs, the same is being discharged to maintain the dam’s FRL of 120 feet.
With heavy rain continuing to lash catchment areas in Kabini and Krishnarajasagar dams, the Karnataka reservoirs have been discharging over 80,000 cusecs.
The heavy flooding at Hogenakkal falls has also forced a ban on tourists and coracle operators for the 16th consecutive day. The flood alert issued to people along the banks of river Cauvery in 12 delta districts also stands good due to the heavy flow of water. The district administration has been continuing with its awareness drive asking people to move to safer locations.
As the discharge from the 16-eye sluices has gradually increased from Mettur dam, the plantain crops and farms located along the banks of river Cauvery were submerged on Tuesday. The tourist arrivals to Mettur dam have increased over the last two days to witness the brimming reservoir. Meanwhile, water entered the houses located in a few low lying areas at Kumarapalayam in Namakkal district. The houses were mostly located in encroached land and people have been asked to move over to safer locations.
Administration ready to tackle flood: Minister
With the flood warning issues for the districts along the Cauvery river, state Revenue Minister RB Udayakumar appealed to the people to be safe while welcoming the waters. Addressing reporters here on Tuesday, Udayakumar said even if excess water is released from the Mettur dam there will be no problem in the low-lying areas as the disaster management team is kept ready.
Also, the revenue officials including the Tahsildars with the help of Village Administrative Officers had informed every single person living near the banks of river Cauvery to vacate to safer places. To inspect the current situation K Sathyagopal, Commissioner of Revenue Administration, had gone to delta districts, he added. The district collectors of the delta districts had been alerted to set up rescue and relief camps in case of any emergency and people need not panic. Policemen and Fire fighters have also been instructed to stay alert round the clock to handle any contingency, he said. “Cauvery is flowing for the livelihood of the people and people should welcome it without risking their lives,” noted Udayakumar.
