Permit own food in theatres: Consumer forum
Taking a cue from Maharashtra, the Tamil Nadu government should allow public to take their own food to theatres in the state, demanded Centre for Consumer and Environment Education, Research and Advocacy, an organisation accredited with United Nations Environment Programme.
Chennai
In a letter to Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami, Sankar, executive director, Centre for Consumer and Environment Education, Research and Advocacy, stated that in the shops located in cinema theatres and in airports, in Tamil Nadu, exorbitant rates are charged for products like popcorn and water.Â
For instance, popcorn is charged Rs 150 and a litre of water is charged up to Rs 80. Also, public are not allowed to take their own food inside the theatres and have no choice but to buy things inside.
However, recently, Maharashtra government had announced that people can take their own food inside the theatres and the theatres should not charge extra from the people. The water bottles and eatables should be charged the same rate that they are sold outside the complex.Â
So, taking the steps taken by the Maharashtra government into consideration, the Tamil Nadu government should pass orders to the theatres and the airport officials to not overcharge eatables and water sold in the shops present there and to allow people to carry their own food inside the cinema theatres, demanded Sankar.Â
