Police officials, who will keep a watch for persons attempting self-immolation, at the Collectorate premises were surprised on seeing a group of 100 villagers trooping into the Vellore Collector’s office.

The angry villagers suddenly threw their ration cards on the ground. When police enquired with them, the villagers complained that the local fair price shop was not supplying essential commodities to nearly 40 families.

Residents claimed that despite repeated appeals, neither the local officials nor the fair price shop salesman could offer an explanation regarding the non-availability of commodities.

They also alleged that the ration cards were of no use to them now. So, they do not want to hold the cards any more.

As Collector SA Raman was not present in the Collectorate at that time, police allowed four villagers to meet DRO G Sengottayyan, who was receiving petitions from the public during the grievance day meeting.
