Late surge lifts rainfall record in TN
After remaining deficient during the season, the Southwest monsoon strengthened in the last few days, taking the seasonal rainfall from deficiency to excess in a matter of few days. There indeed are several deficient districts, but a few in the western region, especially Coimbatore, received torrential rains so far this season.
Chennai
According the numbers from the Regional Meteorological Department, Chennai, the state received 92.4 mm rain since the beginning of the Southwest monsoon on May 29 till July 14, as against the normal of 74.4 mm. This is a departure of 24 per cent in excess.
Puducherry, too, recorded an excess of 36 per cent during this season.
Chennai, Tiruvallur and Kancheepuram, the three districts that form the state capital, received good rains during the evening hours in the recent days.
Thanks to this, the rainfall in Chennai was nearly a fifth above the normal, went up marginally in Tiruvallur, but fell by five per cent in Kancheepuram.
Of the 32 districts in the State, 13 recorded deficient rainfall of varying margins. The worst was Tirupur district, which had a deficiency of 60 per cent.
What makes this number even more interesting is, its neighbouring district, Coimbatore, received a whopping 329 per cent increase in actual rainfall this season.
This includes the 10 cm rain that was recorded at Valparai and Chinnakalar stations on Saturday.
Speaking to DT Next, a senior official from the met department pointed out how Krishnagiri and Dharmapuri district in the western belt, which usually get good showers during the Southwest monsoon season, received deficient rainfall this time.
