According to police, the seven-member gang visited a pharmacy, which was run by one Sathya (45), at Karumathampatty in the outskirts of Coimbatore on Thursday evening.
“Posing as CBI sleuths, they sought money from the woman to avoid being arrested for treating patients without having a medical degree,” police said.
Police said Sathya agreed to pay them Rs two lakh after negotiations.
She asked the gang to stay in the pharmacy, while she left by promising to return with the money. Sathya informed about the incident to her family members, who then alerted the police.
The cops rushed to the spot and arrested four members of the gang while the remaining persons managed to escape.
The arrested persons were identified as Perumal (45), Madurai Veeran (21), Maheshwaran (46) and Ilayaraja (22). Of them, Perumal was a former cop. He was dismissed from service for alleged irregularities. Police have launched a search to nab the remaining culprits.
