CM announces Rs 5 lakh solatium for Coimbatore mock drill victim, drill agent allegedly unauthorised

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami announced a compensation sum of Rs 5 lakh to the girl's family who died  in a mock drill conducted by her college on July 12.

Further, reports claim that the agent conducting the mock drill was allegedly not professionally qualified for orchestrating the drill.

The National Disaster Management Authority had tweeted regarding this incident this morning. Their tweet read, "Unfortunate that this incidence has happened & we have lost a young life.Our heartfelt condolences to the family.However,the National Disaster Management Authority wasn't involved in this drill.The trainer wasn't authorized by NDMA to conduct such a drill."

According to police, the deceased student identified as Logeswari, a resident of Alandurai near Coimbatore was sitting on the sunshade of the building, at a height of about 50 feet ready to climb down using a rope. She was studying second year BBA at Kalaimagal College of Arts and Science at Virazhiyur in Narasipuram.

She was among the 20 students who participated in the disaster management class. They were being trained to jump down through an emergency exit window from the class room located in the second floor. It is a building with three floors.

As a safety measure, students stood holding a net down the ground. While the trainer R Arumugam from National Disaster Management from Vandalur in Chennai, who was standing nearby, touched the girl prompting her to jump by holding the rope, the girl allegedly lost grip and fell. However the students alleged that the girl was pushed to death.

During the fall, the girl suffered a hit on her head in the sunshade located in the first floor and fell down. She was immediately taken to a private hospital in Thondamuthur and was referred to Coimbatore Medical College and Hospital (CMCH), where she was declared brought dead.

Based on a complaint by the college principal L Mala, the Perur police have registered a case and further inquiries are on. The body of the deceased has been kept at CMCH for a post mortem.
